The 6th volume of Lexikográfiai füzetek series edited by the Dictionary Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and published by Akadémiai Kiadó (Budapest) offers both the history and current issues of the different types of Hungarian monolingual dictionaries, primarily for a non-Hungarian audience. Such a detailed survey of Hungarian lexicography has not as yet been available in the major foreign languages.
Besides reviewing the history of general comprehensive, historical and etymological dictionaries, studies also deal with special academic dictionaries, such as dialect, frequency, spelling or phraseological dictionaries as well as dictionaries of synonyms, foreign words or proper names. Among the more specialised genres illustrated children’s dictionaries have also been covered.
A new trend in modern lexicography, corpus lexicography, has also been duly dealt with.
Among the contributors to this volume are experts both in the theoretical and practical aspects of lexicography – academics and researchers.
The studies in this collection aim to give an overall picture of the state of Hungarian monolingual lexicography in terms of its achievements.
